Overview of the sport of Outrigger Canoeing

Outrigger Canoeing is relatively new sport in Australia with strong support along the eastern seaboard of Queensland and New South Wales.

The racing of outrigger canoes is a recent development of a traditional mode of transport used across Polynesia for thousands of years. The modern day equivalent of the modest fishing and transportation craft is a sleek 42 foot fiberglass craft which responds well to both flat water and strong surf conditions.

RiverCity Outrigger Canoe Club Inc (ROCC) is one of the most recently 70 affiliated outrigger clubs. Across Australia over 3000 paddlers are registered as associate or racing members of various clubs.

The best known racing event in Australia is the Hamilton Island Cup held at the Whitsunday’s famous Hamilton Island for one week over Winter each year. Hawaii's Molokai Crossing was brought to our attention over the last few years by Lisa Curry-Kenny and her Open Womens crew from Mooloolaba which has become one of the fastest women crews in the world to complete at this event.

Throughout most seasons the clubs participate in approximately 10 regattas from flat water sprints to open water marathons. These races see competitors traveling from Sydney, Coffs Harbour and the Northern NSW beaches to Cairns in the far north. Initially the domain of surf competitors, the sport now attracts a variety of athletes of all ages, backgrounds and disciplines.
