Getting to know a ROCC'star
SPRINTS AT LAKE KAWANA (From a Novice point of view)
It was a perfect day up there - light breeze and fine.
It was a great place for a regatta - everything seemed to run on time which was a first for me. We had our 500m first. Our starts were not that flash and we got to the turn about 3rd. Brendan Coombs was our steerer and he nailed the turns which put us a mile in front. All we had to do was belt it home.
The final was the same. We won both races by about 3 seconds. Brendan definitely made the difference. He kept us calm, in time (well most of us) and we just had to do what we do – paddle. Not being 1st to the turn on the 500s I was a bit surprised how we went in the 250s.
It was a skins set up which means the bottom 2 drop off after each heat. No break in between, you basically turn and race again. We won all heats and the FINAL. The lactic burning in the arms was unbelievable.
I’m a bit surprised we didn’t have more teams in for the sprints. Flat water would seem to me to be our home turf. I thought it was an excellent day.
In between races you could sit back and cheer the other teams on. Megan and a couple of other girls were sunbaking (An activity I think should be encouraged) We didn’t have to tow canoes, just basically show up with a paddle. How easy is that!
I’d also like to give a big thank you to Steve Lincez. Sprints are definitely up his alley and he was great to have in the boat (for an old bloke). So I believe that ends our novice season. I’d like to thank all the novice guys for a great time. Our boat was always positive even if we lost, flipped or flipped and lost.
Sport is a funny thing. In our novice crew you had a Builder, Concreter, Student and Accountant. People who otherwise would never probably bump into each other. But after a year paddling together we are mates.
On a more serious note - more sunbaking girls.
And that’s the Novice view of the day
